Township and Robben Island Tour
Township and Robben Island Tour
Tour Overview
Your journey begins with a drive through the historic District Six, once a vibrant multicultural community before the forced removals during apartheid. If open, visit the District Six Museum to gain insight into the area’s remarkable history and resilience.
Continue to a local crèche, where you’ll see how community initiatives provide education, care, and a safe environment for local children. Explore Langa, Cape Town’s oldest township, where you’ll browse the lively local market, discover authentic arts and crafts, and have the option to visit a traditional healer to learn about African traditional medicine.
Travel through Bonteheuwel before arriving in Gugulethu, home to the Gugulethu Seven Memorial and the Amy Biehl Memorial, both commemorating key moments in South Africa’s journey to democracy. On Sundays, guests may also experience the vibrant atmosphere of a local community church service (optional).
In the afternoon, board the Robben Island ferry (subject to availability) for a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the prison where Nelson Mandela was held and see his former prison cell while learning about South Africa’s struggle for freedom from knowledgeable former political prisoners and expert guides.
Upon returning to the V&A Waterfront, you may either be transferred back to your accommodation or choose to remain at the Waterfront and make your own way back later. Please advise your guide of your preference before the ferry departs.
